Case Studies
Financial savings can be made by reducing electric and maintenance costs.
At Lite-4-Life, we are requested to look at a variety of different projects to satisfy the clients needs, below are example case studies which may be of interest to you, especially when there are financial savings to be made by reducing electric and maintenance costs.
Lite-4-Life were asked to look at a variety of areas in pubs to see if we could reduce the annual cost of general lighting and maintenance of emergency lighting. As part of that request we initially looked at the Basement areas which are normally made up of of a series of larger and smaller rooms that are used for storage, beer chilling, spirit storage etc. Once we focussed on one particular establishment, we discovered that is was common place for the staff to arrive in the morning, turn the basement lights on, and leave them on all day, sometimes 24/7. We opted to fit a bespoke safety way guidance system in the basement area, which in this case comprised of a combination of general photoluminescent signage, warning signs, edge/column identification, wayfinding tape and photoluminescent stair nosings.
In addition to the safety way guidance system, we removed all the light switches and installed passive infrared sensors so that the lighting only comes on when staff actually enter the basement. Following the photoluminescent safety way guidance system (PSWGS) being completed, we went onto removing the existing the emergency lights as they were no longer required as the PSWGS will provide adequate illumination throughout the means of escape, therefore satisfying the requirements of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order (RRFSO) Article 14.2/H by adequately illuminating the means of escape, whilst satisfying a formal risk assessment.
Given the above, after the cost of the safety way guidance system and the electrical adjustments, it was calculated that this exercise has saved the Pub Management Group £7,500.00 over 10 years, this is due to a reduction in hourly use of general lighting (16 hours average reduced to 4 hours) and the fact that emergency light maintenance regime is no longer required.
